Watch Over You [short story, epilogue]

Dear fellow bloggers, readers and writers. This post is in continuation of  Watch Over You #5. To understand the characters and the plot properly, you need to read all the previous parts.

She just spent the whole night waiting for him. He walked through the front door and locked it. He had a newspaper in one hand and the car keys in the other. He didn’t stop to say something to her. He threw the car keys on the coffee table and went straight to the small bar in the living area. With newspaper still in one hand, he poured himself a drink and gulped it. He repeated it a few times and then placed the glass on the counter. He was looking dishevelled. His face had lost colour and his eyes were bloodshot. He was still in the same clothes. Looked like he left the house in a panic. He gripped the newspaper tightly in both hands as if he wanted to crush it. He was panting and the newspaper in his hands was shaking.

“I think I am going mad,” he said in a quivering raspy voice.

Nora thought he was talking to her. Although it felt like as if he didn’t know she was sitting there. She couldn’t control herself. “Why would you say that?” she asked him.

Deep down, she knew. But somehow it felt quite safe to live in denial. Tears were running down her face now. On the spur of the moment, Zayne picked up the glass from the counter and threw it against the wall. He was heaving now while looking at the shattered glass on the floor. He gripped his head in both hands and let out a strangled cry. It was too much for Nora. She couldn’t see him like this. Couldn’t see him fall apart piece by piece. She loved him. She couldn’t even bear the thought of him hurting so deeply.

After a while Zayne calmed down. He kicked the newspaper which was now on the floor, and went to the bedroom, taking the liquor bottle with him. He went inside and locked the door.

Nora stayed there, seated. Alone. Distraught and heartbroken, she was looking at the front page of the newspaper which was now lying near her feet on the floor. The front page had a headline about some car crash. She didn’t bother reading the whole news. Didn’t bother looking too long at the picture displayed there. It didn’t matter anyway. Zayne was alone in the room, drinking himself to the oblivion, somehow to lessen the pain and make it bearable. To say the least, there were only a few steps and a door separating them. But she knew it was already too late.

At least, I got to see him again. At least, he too will start believing in miracles.

“I love you, Zayne,” she said, sobbing. “I’ll always love you. I am so sorry. But you don’t have to feel alone. Because you know, you know I’ll always watch over you.”

….THE END….

‘WATCH OVER YOU’ PLAYLIST:

When it comes to writing fiction, music has always been like Hermione Granger’s beaded bag for me. All you have to do is reach inside with your hand, and magnificently, you always pull out what you want. These are some of my favourite songs that inspired ‘Watch Over You’

Wherever you will go by The Calling

I won’t see you tonight – part 1 by Avenged Sevenfold

Memories by Within Temptation

So, with this we say goodbye to Nora and Zayne. I hope you enjoyed this short story as much as I enjoyed writing it. Feel free to give me your feedback in the comment section below!!

    .
Hermoine Granger’s bag may do wonders, but it is Dumbledores of life who teach us more.We have Snapes all around us ,we misjudge,,,,and always feel like Hermoine should have been made for Harry Potter, not for Ron Weasley!!!!!!!
If Hagreds existed life would have been more fun!!!

  3. Wow. This was so… beautiful, but sad. I really loved how evolved the characters were in such a short story. I still struggle with that.
    Beautiful writing.
I only have one question. If she had died and was a ghost, then how come in the morning, the old lady and Zayn could see her? I think I’m missing something vital here and so I asked the question.

  4. 😱😢😥 so this was a paranormal romance. But why! Oh why did she have to die…. It was beautifully strung together gurl. Keep writing like this and you’ll go places. One word of advice, bring in some more elements to flesh out your characters, because when you do that, readers connect with the character so that their ups and downs are felt deeply by the reader too. The rest I believe you have in you to make it 😊 😊 😊 😊

  6. It must be heartbreaking to see the world after one’s own death. All your loved ones in so much pain, and your own loss of all you had. Touching story, I liked it a lot. Did she die when she went to sleep? Before that people saw her, right? I knew it was a bad idea!

    1. Thanks a lot. I am really glad you liked it. The closure, it depends one’s perspective. That’s what I tried to do here. If you remembered their conversation from park, it’s all explained there. She believed in miracles. Her faith brought her one last chance. Or you can also say her father was looking out for her. I know my stories don’t make sense sometimes. But that’s what I like😁😁 Thanks again for reading, buddy!
