Watch Over You [short story, part #5]

Though she couldn’t understand why, but she was in a hurry in the morning. So she couldn’t thank the old lady properly. She made her way towards her and sat on the bench with her on her left side.

“Hello, um ma’am,” she started. Wow. She didn’t even know her name. “I know, I was quiet a hassle for you in the morning. But I am really grateful for your help. I don’t know what I would have done without you. So thank you so much.”

The old lady didn’t lift her eyes from her phone, as if she didn’t even know that she was talking to her.

Why would she be nice to me now? After I literally used her in the morning and then ran away like a selfish brat?

Nora was going to speak again before the dog started barking loudly. It was a small dog. Not a big, scary one. But still, it was barking at Nora like it was ready to bite her.

“Be still, boy,” old lady yelled at her dog and pulled on the leash, but the dog was getting out of control. “That’s it! I am taking you home now. I don’t know what’s gotten into you today!” the old lady got up and dragged away the dog with her.

“That went well. I’ll just go then, I guess,” Nora said to herself.

She got up and slowly started walking towards her home. When she reached home, Zayne’s car was nowhere to be seen. She went inside but didn’t find Zayne. She started yelling his name but there was no response. Why would he leave like that? Without even locking the front door? She didn’t know what was going on. Or did she? No, she should not think about that. It had gotten dark outside and he still wasn’t home. At last, she gave up. Sleeping was out of question now. She sat down on the couch in the living room and decided to just wait for him. Too many thoughts were running through her mind. She felt like a heavy stone had been dropped inside her stomach. After what felt like an eternity, Zayne returned. It was morning now. She just spent the whole night waiting for him. He walked through the front door and locked it……….TO BE CONTINUED
